Remarks by Minister Tan See Leng at the media doorstop on Indonesia gas exports
You would have all noted that EMA confirmed the reduction of supply of natural gas from Indonesia, PM had also spoken about this earlier.
Our gas supplies are covered by commercial contracts between our gas importer, Gas Supply Pte Ltd (GSPL), and its Indonesian suppliers. We expect the contracts to be honoured. GSPL will engage its suppliers to determine if there is a breach of contract, and if so to pursue the commercial remedies provided in the contracts.
This reduction, in total, amounts to 17 billion British thermal units per day, or BBTUD, over a period of 18 days.
But I would like to assure Singaporeans that we have sufficient gas supply to meet our demand.
This reduction of 17 BBTUD in supply is less than 2% of our power sector gas demand per day. We have sufficient replacement gas from other sources, including LNG.
Energy security is critical to Singapore, and that is why we have multiple layers of defence in place, including:
Diversifying our sources of natural gas from around the world;
Maintaining our standby LNG facility; and
Ensuring that Singapore GasCo is ready to import more LNG whenever required.
Our gencos are also required to maintain sufficient diesel reserves to guard against a larger disruption of gas supplies.
In the medium term, we are building a second LNG terminal, and diversifying our energy mix. I will be elaborating more on this in my Singapore Energy Lecture tomorrow.
So I would like to urge Singaporeans to “Keep calm and carry on”.
We have dealt seamlessly with such reductions in the past without incident. And the Government will continue to ensure the reliability and resilience of Singapore’s energy supply.
