Oral reply to PQ on Power generation capacity to support growth of semiconductor sector in Senoko
6 October 2026
Question:
Mr Ng Shi Xuan: To ask the Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) (a) whether there is adequate power generation capacity to support the growth of the semiconductor sector in Senoko; (b) whether there are plans to upgrade such capacity; and (c) if not, why not.
Oral Answer (to be attributed to Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng)
1. In Senoko, there is enough power generation capacity to support the growth of the semiconductor industry arising from projects that EDB has secured.
2. EMA monitors demand growth closely, incorporating forward projections from EDB and other agencies, and plans for the expansion of generation capacity accordingly. Between 2026 and 2031, five new power plants are being developed and expected to come online. This will increase Singapore’s installed generation capacity by about 20% from 11.8 GW to 14.2 GW. Under EMA’s latest Request for Proposal for the development of new power plants, more power plants may come online by 2032.
3. In parallel, EMA is enhancing the transmission network and will continue to plan ahead for additional grid and generation capacity to accommodate future growth in electricity demand across Singapore.
