6 October 2026
Question:
Ms Cassandra Lee: To ask the Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) (a) whether the proposed western island is being considered as a potential site for future large-scale power-generation facilities, including nuclear power generation; and (b) if so, what site-selection and safety criteria will be applied.
Oral Answer (to be attributed to Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng
1. The proposed western island is part of our long-term planning for future national needs in defence, energy and industry. As Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in his National Day Rally 2026 speech, the island will support a new generation of industries including power generation and advanced manufacturing facilities, and infrastructure for the SAF.
2. No decision has been made on deploying nuclear energy in Singapore. It is hence premature to discuss specific locations for any potential nuclear plant or set out planning parameters such as site selection and safety criteria.
