Question:
Ms Lee Hui Ying: To ask the Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) in relation to the ongoing studies on advanced nuclear energy technologies and their potential suitability for Singapore (a) what are the expected timelines of the studies; and (b) whether there are plans for public consultation before deciding on the suitability of nuclear energy deployment in Singapore.
Oral Answer (to be attributed to Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng
1. We are embarking on Phase 1 of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) in 2027. The Phase 1 review assesses only our ability to make an informed decision on nuclear energy deployment, and not whether nuclear energy should be deployed in Singapore. The ongoing studies are part of our preparation for the INIR Phase 1 review mission.
2. When the INIR Mission is complete which could be towards the end of 2027 or in 2028, we intend to share the IAEA’s independent findings and assessment of Singapore’s readiness in making an informed decision, and the public will have an opportunity to provide their views then. This will be in addition to ongoing efforts to strengthen Singaporeans’ understanding of nuclear energy.
